Biography of Aqib Jawed

Contrary to popular beliefs, Aaqib Javed made his Test debut before Waqar Younis, and was the second-youngest Test player when he did so. From registering the best ODI figures of the time (including a hat-trick) in a final at Sharjah against India to playing a crucial role in Pakistan’s victory in World Cup 1992, Aaqib was a superstar by the time he had reached 20. In fact, records suggest that he made his First-Class debut at the age of 12 in 1984.

While Wasim Akram formed a formidable pair with Waqar after Imran Khan’s retirement, Aaqib had to remain happy with the role of the third seamer. His Test career was restricted to a mere 22 outings, but his 163 ODIs got him 182 wickets at 31.43, four five-wicket hauls (three of them against India), and an economy rate of 4.28.

Aaqib got involved in numerous controversies, the most infamous of which was the “Sweater-Gate” incident of Old Trafford in 1992 with Roy Palmer. His international career came to an end by the time he was 26 amidst match-fixing scandals. He was one of those men who spoke out against the ill that engulfed cricket.

He took to coaching after he retired from First-Class cricket (at 30), and guided Pakistan to an Under-19 World Cup title in 2004. He headed Pakistan NCA and became Pakistan bowling coach before being appointed coach of UAE head of the ICC World Cup 2015.
