Biography of Moin Khan
Rashid Latif (the better gloveman) and Moin Khan (the better batsman) fought for the Pakistan wicketkeeper’s slot throughout the 1990s. Eventually both had fair shares behind the stumps, and both went on to lead Pakistan.
Moin played 69 Tests and 219 ODIs. He was chirpy and ebullient behind the stumps (shabash Saqi and shabash Mushy became synonymous with Pakistan bowling in the 1990s) , but it was with the bat that he grabbed more attention, making a mockery of conventional bowling and field placements with his outrageous strokeplay, sweeping and reverse-sweeping his way to glory even against fast bowlers.
He scored four Test hundreds, every single one of which came under pressure. His pinnacle probably came in World Cup 1999, where he exploded down the order several times despite conditions that helped the seamers, the most outrageous knocks being a 12-ball 31 against Australia and a 56-ball 63 against South Africa.
As expected, Moin scored the first Twenty20 hundred in Pakistan (a 59-ball 112 for Karachi Dolphins at Lahore in 2005). However, his chances of making a comeback to the national team ended with Kamran Akmal’s advent.
Post retirement, Moin never gave up his association with the sport. He became Head Coach of Pakistan before becoming their Chief Selector.
